Isaac 3: Now the Rain

It’s about 8:40 am. Here’s the update…

We went to bed around 10 pm last night. Living right on the coast, but in the space in “the claw” as I call it (Haiti looks like a lobster claw on a map) we’re a bit protected by the island of La Gonave, so we weren’t sure what to expect weather wise as the storm hit land last night. I woke up around 3 am when the wind started to pick up a bit more and the ocean started sounding louder. Fell back asleep then both Chris and I woke up with a start when we heard the wind start roaring just after 4 am. I think I said something like, “Here we go!” as I got out of bed to start closing windows more.

We stayed up watching as much as we could, but it was still so dark that it was hard to see. The breaker blew on some of our security lights. Just happens it was the ones in the part of the yard where we were looking :( About 45 minutes into things a big branch came down and pulled down the wire for our battery meters. Not a big deal and something that can easily be fixed in a few days. It just means that Chris has to walk out to the shop to see how much charge the batteries have.

The kids, thankfully, slept through the entire thing. We were too keyed up to sleep and ended up watching most of the nastiness. This morning the yard is covered in small branches and leaves, but no damage. It was intense though.

The rain has settled in, which is really the big concern. Yes, the wind was bad and I’m sure did a lot of damage in other areas (haven’t had a chance to check yet), but the rain is of more concern right now because it can lead to major flooding.

We’ll keep you posted as there’s news.
